Abstract :
Summary form only given. The title of "PEACE Network" has been applied to represent the possible and future electric power transmission interconnections between Russia, Mongolia, China, North and South Korea and Japan. The term "PEACE" is derived from power, economy and clean environment and symbolizes the intent of the task force which has been assembled to undertake the feasibility studies. The proposed transmission projects will enable the countries of East Asia and Russia to trade in electric energy. Collectively they represent great economic powers and large resources of clean electrical energy. It is therefore only a matter of time before the means of international trade in electricity will be demanded. It is recognized that government policies and laws need to be charted, and the results of these feasibility studies will play a valuable role in guiding their formulation. The success of the studies will very much depend on the goodwill and guidance of the governments of each country. The feasibility studies will be undertaken strictly on technical, economic, social and environmental/sustainable terms and the results will prove a valuable resource not only for government planners and policy makers, but also for interested developers and investors. The feasibility studies will show how the well known benefits of interconnections will lead to abundant, cheaper and cleaner electricity for the region. An East Asian power grid will be one major contribution to simulating sound economic development for every country participating with overall reductions in greenhouse gas emissions
