Abstract :
We present an optimizable model for process independent symbolic design. It is built upon a layout model, called the multigrid with discrete compaction, the notion of grammars (i.e. sets of symbolic rules), the use of constraint satisfaction for grammar checking, the compilation, optimization and automatic generation of grammars. The notion of grammar encapsulates design constraints that are very close to what is usually referred to as a design style. This formalization enables us to build an optimizable model of the design style
