Abstract :
Summarises the reasons behind a company´s decision to invest in a private network. Today private networks are composed of separate building blocks rather than integrated building blocks. For local area applications LANs and PABXs are the main building blocks. Voice applications can only adequately be covered by a PABX. With a modern PABX voice and data can be integrated as well. With the advent of modern signalling systems PABX functionality can also be extended to be offered in networks. Data services offered by the PABX can be an alternative for terminal distribution primarily for low frequency users of data. User with stringent requirements on data speeds for file transfer etc. are best served by a LAN or a dedicated data network. For wide area data, aspects leased lines are used along with public data network services such as circuit or packet switched data
