Abstract
One of the main requirements of the current Smart Grid is the availability of real-time, broadly distributed information on the status of its electrical components. In particular, for the distribution network, this requires the integration of several cheap and reliable sensors for monitoring main electrical parameters of its electric boards. In this paper we present an optical solution to meet the accuracy requirements and the need of intrinsically safe and secure operation for a continuous monitoring of voltage values in Medium Voltage electric boards. Results of a preliminary laboratory characterization of optical elements and of an assembled layout, under DC and AC voltage, are reported with the aim to practically assess possible measurement errors. The good quality of the used optical components and, in general, the effectiveness of the adopted layout are confirmed.
