Abstract :
When implemented in practice, adaptive controllers incorporate substantial monitoring or jacketing software schemes. The introduction of an expert system to perform such duties allows a distinction to be made between the control and identification algorithms, and the accompanying supervisory functions. The self-tuning expert controller has been established on an industry standard VME platform linked to a network of Inmos T800 transputers. Illustrations are given of how the performance and robustness of an adaptive controller, applied to turbogenerator excitation control, can be greatly improved through expert system intervention, on a laboratory micromachine system.
