  • Abstract
An intelligent telemedicine system for remote monitoring of lung function is described. Parameters useful in assessing lung function are measured using a home spirometer and are transmitted over a telephone line to a database residing on an institutional computer system. A patient´s spirometric measurement data is periodically screened automatically to detect changes and trends that may indicate lung transplant dysfunction or other incident. The clinical staff assesses patient status by reviewing patient data via a secure Internet connection. The clinical staff is alerted via e-mail if immediate attention is needed. The system monitors patient compliance with the spirometry measurement and data transmission protocol and monitors clinical staff compliance with the review protocol. The system offers the promise of convenient, inexpensive, and accessible spirometric monitoring.
