Abstract
This paper compares the fraction of vegetation (FV) and normalized different vegetation index (NDVI) as indicators of oasis surface vegetation condition in Landsat imagery by investigating their relationships with the land surface temperature (LST). Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) and Enhanced Thematic Mapper plus (ETM+) data were used to estimate the LST in 1999 and 2009 for three different oases in the south marginal zone of the Tarim Basin, China. The FV were generated using a normalized spectral mixture analysis of Landsat TM imagery in September 1999 and 2009. Liner regression model was used to quantify these relations between LST, FV and NDVI. The results indicate there is a relatively strong linear relationship between LST and FV for both years, whereas the relationship between LST and NDVI is stronger than FV
