Abstract
The authors present a new methodology developed for predicting the chip breakability levels achievable in machining operations. This method is based on a fuzzy classification technique involving neighboring cluster groups. The new chip control diagrams with classified regions are suitable for use in computer-aided process planning systems for providing a predictive assessment of chip breakability at the planning stage, prior to the actual machining. The integral role of this methodology in the process of intelligent machining is illustrated. It is possible to predict chip breakability for any combination of feed and depth of cut values
