Abstract
The periodogram (FFT processing) is used for routine analysis of HF radar backscatter from the ocean. The authors propose the application of the modified covariance method. This is a modern spectral method which estimates the coefficients of an autoregressive (AR) model. The authors compare these two different techniques and evaluate their respective performances with a Monte Carlo simulation study
