Performance of UMTS to GSM handover algorithms

Handover constitutes a key feature for ensuring interworking between the various wireless systems that have emerged recently. We focus on handover between UMTS and GSM networks; it is indeed a crucial mechanism for UMTS operators to ensure continuity of service and most benefit from previous GSM investments. The paper presents a performance evaluation of such intersystem handover, obtained through dynamic system simulations. Different parameter settings of the handover algorithm have been studied, together with different triggering criteria, for a realistic network configuration. The paper is a first step towards optimisation of the UMTS to GSM handover algorithm and its setting.
