Abstract :
This paper presents the first stage in investigating the effect of using Halbach array in MW level permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSGs) for wind turbine applications. A section of a typical PMSG is modeled in finite element analysis. The model is simplified and considered linear instead of cylindrical for initial investigation. The linearization provides flexibility in adjusting the design characteristics as well as valuable indications in short processing time. The linear model of the machine underwent testing for flux, flux density, and total harmonic distortion. The machine´s traditional array is then replaced by a Halbach array and retested. Comparison graphs and tables summarize the findings. The analysis of the results reveals the strengths and weaknesses of the Halbach array in large PMSG applications and provides direction and prospect for the cylindrical design model to be investigated in the future.
