Abstract :
This paper studies the feasibility of applying Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS) as a surface representation for accurate electromagnetic simulations based on a ray tracing algorithm. Two major problems have to be solved here: Due to the complex mathematical formulation, the ray-NURBS intersection tests can only be performed with an iterative method. Secondly, an efficient optimization procedure needs to be applied to accelerate the calculations. The results obtained in this work clearly show that a NURBS surface representation is very well-suited for combination with a ray tracing algorithm.
