Abstract :
This paper introduces an in-process measurement system which operates without pausing the machining process, and could result in enhancing productivity and quality control in manufacturing processes of the surface grinding spindle-type. As the gauging sensor of the measurement system, the authors propose an eddy current sensor which uses the eddy current induced when a metallic materials is placed in a high frequency electromagnetic field and it is strongly insensitive to other interferences such as cutting fluid, coolant, contact pressure and wear at a contact point. For data analysis, the measurement system was modelled as a linearized discrete form and the states with noises are estimated by an extended Kalman filter. Validation of this system was proved through simulations and experiments
