Abstract :
Base station (BS) and mobile station (MS) antennas are typically designed to be vertically polarized (VP) which is favourable in large cells such as macrocells and microcells. However, the usage of the MS for video viewing and surfing internet in Data Mode in a small cell or public femtocell is largely horizontally polarized (HP). This creates the need to reassess the impact of different polarisation transmit antennas at the BS in such environment under line-of-sight (LOS) and obstructed-LOS scenarios. It is found that, for a short range open space environment, neither a VP nor HP base station antenna is the optimum choice in accommodating random MS orientation due to human handling in different scenarios. The usage of a circularly polarized (CP) BS antenna is the best compromise and more effective in reducing polarisation mismatch loss due to human handlings.
