Abstract
Describes a study of video traffic behaviour in ATM networks with respect to the choice of values for policing function and call acceptance control parameters. Results are presented based on traffic obtained through the simulation of a typical conditional replenishment video codec. By looking at the maximum virtual cell rate of multiplexed traffic, using a sampling interval determined by the capacity of the ATM buffer, the ideal statistical multiplexing gain over a link is shown. A traffic control system based on a linear call acceptance control algorithm and the policing of the virtual mean and virtual peak cell rates using moving windows are discussed. It is shown that the independent policing of the sources restricts the achievement of the multiplexing gain initially demonstrated
