Abstract :
Summary form only given. This paper describes a laser shearing interferometer (LSI), for making spatially and temporally resolved measurements of the plasma density and current in an imploding z-pinch. Experiments were conducted on the /spl sim/700 kA Hawk accelerator at NRL. The results presented in this paper emphasize the functionality of the LSI. A companion paper presents a more detailed analysis of the density measurements.
