Abstract :
Summary form only given. We investigate the capability of the visible light photon counter (VLPC) to distinguish between higher photon numbers. The VLPC is illuminated by a picosecond pulsed laser. The average photon number per pulse is adjusted to a value around . The VLPC produces a pulse whose height is proportional to the number of incident photons. Thus, the pulse height spectrum at the output of the VLPC features a series of peaks, one for each photon number state. This is shown for when up to seven simultaneous photon events are observed.
