Abstract :
RIA bears not only similar functions and features like traditional desktop applications, but also some irreplaceable advantages in UI performance, interactive capability, and network transmission. Compared with presently prevailing Browser/Server framework characterized by "Thin Client", RIA technology can make full use of and balance the computing ability of client and server, and then enhances interoperability and performance of software system. XML, acting as one kind of extensive open language and common data exchange format, plays a very important role in the field of web applications. This paper firstly gives a brief introduction to RIA and one of its specific applications: OpenLayers, and to a famous web map server: ArcIMS and its specific data exchange protocol: ArcXML. It can be found OpenLayers has much better interoperability, flexibility and higher performance than the intrinsic client of ArcIMS. Then one solution is proposed to construct the information system for monitoring the status of land use. Within proposed solution, OpenLayers, as replacer to the intrinsic client of ArcIMS, is extended to implement some special functions. The business model of the system and how the technology mentioned above is used for the model is introduced in details.
