Abstract
In this paper, we describe an efficient architecture for the content-based arithmetic coding in binary image. The architecture uses line buffers and barrel shifters to provide high efficiency and flexibility for various “content” and different block sizes. In the architecture, row and column line buffers are used to reduce the times of memory access. Besides, barrel shifter supports variety in “contents” and block size. It can be used for INTRA or INTER shape coding in MPEG-4 video standard
