Abstract :
High data rate (HDR) is a method for transmission of wireless packet data at high rates which is based on code division multiple access (CDMA) technology. It is designed to maximise throughput on the downlink by transmitting data from the base station (BS) to the mobile station (MS) at the highest data rate that can be supported by the channel. This is achieved by constantly monitoring the channel conditions and adapting the modulation and coding of the signal accordingly. At any time, the BS will be transmitting at full power to a single user selected using proportional fairness scheduling. This favours users when their channels are at their best. We have developed a model which simulates an HDR network with multiple transmit and receive antennas. The model, which includes correlated shadowing and Rayleigh fading, generates results for throughput using proportional fairness scheduling. For N transmit antennas it is assumed that the transmitter knows the channel coefficients and forms N orthogonal ´eigenvalue´ channels between the BS and MS. We give results showing how the throughput varies with the number of users per cell for different numbers of transmit and receive antennas.
