Abstract
This paper examines two specific techniques applied to the downlink transmission within the UTRA TDD standard where multiple antennas are used at both transmitter and receiver. The first technique is currently supported within the standard (although not explicitly) and is a combination of transmit diversity and receive diversity. The second technique is an extension of the first technique that also allows the maximum transmission rate to be increased. Simulation results are gaiven for both techniques with a joint detection receiver showing the benefit of using multiple receive antennas. The simulation models the UTRA TDD transmission chain and includes a channel model that accounts for correlation between antenna elements at both the transmitter and receiver. Results are given for realistic antenna deployments and typical azimuth spreads.
