Abstract :
The performance of a converter using external commutation on the dc side is investigated. For this purpose the waveforms of currents and voltages are discussed considering especially the overlap. Equations for the angle of overlap and for the angle of advance are derived. The advantages of this type of converters are described if applied to a synchronous machine drive system.
