Abstract :
We have fabricated ridge-type, single-mode multi-slot waveguides that consist of 40 nm-thin Si and Er- doped silica layers. By utilizing the Er ions as atom-sized, localized optical probes, the degree of photon localization in low-index layers can be determined unequivocally.
