Abstract :
This study looks into the generation of risk index for an assessment of power system adequacy. The index has values of 0 to 1, it is a ´normalised´ value of risk where the operator can better appreciate the levels of system inadequacy risk. Generation inadequacy is based on generating capacity, reactive power requirements and on transmission constraints. It does not include transmission contingencies. Power flow simulations are done to determine the operational limits of a test system. This is coupled with probabilistic analysis to determine the risk level of adequacy in the power system.
