Abstract :
The variable reluctance machine (VRM) drive technology comprises a wide assortment of industrial drive possibilities ranging from a low-cost line voltage self-starting reluctance version to high-speed, precisely controlled machine tool brushless DC (BLDC) versions. Construction and theory are given for excited and nonexcited VRM drive versions. Test results for synchronous and brushless traction VRM drive configurations are displayed. Industrial applications, including fans, grinders, machine tools, robotics, cranes, hoists, conveyers, fork lift trucks, and utility vehicles are considered. The VRM drive technology can be utilized in several configurations for numerous industrial applications.<>
