Abstract
This paper demonstrates how the development of vacuum switchgear technology has led to reduced inspection and maintenance, and reasons that these characteristics are vital to achieve the full benefits of power system automation. The potential of microprocessors, and the change they have already facilitated, is examined. This focuses on manufacturing and test, protection and communication. This leads to a consideration of self monitoring switchgear, and the possibility of the elimination of intervention with the equipment except where needed
