Abstract :
The effect of the power plane inductance on the self-resonant frequency of decoupling capacitors in high-density printed circuit boards (PCBs) is discussed. Several examples are provided which illustrate that the placement location of decoupling capacitors has a considerable effect on the characteristic impedance of capacitors, and hence their capability to provide charge during IC switching. Simulation models and results are provided along with experimental results to illustrate the parasitic effects of interconnect on capacitors´ characteristic impedance.
