Abstract
This paper introduces an optimal control structure as a design tool to examine relationships between operating regimes, economic penalties and controller nonlinearity for a given plant. This structure is used to resolve contradictions extant in the literature between open-loop system nonlinearity and control-relevant nonlinearity. It also reviews the use of coherence estimation as a practical method to measure continuous, open-loop system nonlinearity that is both easy to perform and analyze
