Abstract
The work presented in this paper is motivated by a large media research project entitled "media upheavals". This project is aimed at investigating the foundations and the structural aspects of the media upheavals at the beginning and at the end of the 20th century. In this paper, we propose the application of the grid computing and the Web services paradigms to video content analysis to support the requirements of such multimedia research. We present the realization of a video cut detection algorithm within a state-of-the-art software prototype based on grid services. The user is allowed to access the grid services via a standard browser. Finally, we analyze several aspects of the proposed system in a set of experiments, including an analysis of the usefulness of streaming large video data packets, speed-up possibilities, and an evaluation of the used scheduling algorithm.
