Abstract :
Re-configurable radio systems and networks is potentially the next major leap forward in mobile and wireless communications. The benefits of re-configurable radio techniques in handset design, particularly in the light of the many existing air interface standards, are rapidly becoming clear, and this same technology is facilitating the evolution of flexible base-station platforms. In particular, the ability to incorporate enhancements, service improvements and even dynamically respond to variations in traffic demand are some of the factors making re-configurable radio techniques attractive, and thus the subject of intense R&D activities on a global scale. Further, the ability of the network to support re-configuration in response to operator requirements is essential if the true potential of mobile communications is to be realised, with `middleware´ enabling and managing this complex process. Moreover, user´s demands for new applications can only be economically met through terminal and service reconfiguration. This paper outlines the background and functionality of the key enabling technologies that will be required in order to support `re-configurable radio systems and networks´
