Abstract :
During the last five years, the Laboratory for Applied Remote Sensing and Image Processing (LARSIP) has been conducting an innovative and active Hands-on Training and Research Program for high school and undergraduate students. During the summer of 1999, NASA and the Puerto Rican Alliance supported the programs for Minority Participation (PR-AMP). A total of 55 students participated last summer including 5 students from Interamerican University high school TRIO Math and Science Program. Interaction and teamwork is encouraged to facilitate a more productive and accelerated learning environment. Considerable experience has been gained over the years. The methodology of selecting, guiding and mentoring the high school students is described in detail. The results of this kind of program indicate a high success rate especially for students from humble backgrounds, who have limited access to high technology environments
