Abstract
We demonstrate self-trapping of singly- and doubly-charged vortices in a self-defocusing ldquobackbonerdquo photonic lattice. While the singly-charged vortex can evolve into a gap vortex soliton, the doubly-charged tends to turn into quasi-vortex or quadrupole structure.
