  • Abstract
The deregulation of the electricity, gas and water utilities, both in Europe, USA and other countries, is providing a unique time for introducing real time communications services for customers. The low voltage power distribution network provides a unique opportunity to deliver power to customers and also overlay communications for carrying out a number of utility functions. This paper considers the current evolution of using the power line for communications, the potential problems, together with the development in standards for making this a more robust medium to provide these services.
