Abstract
A study of the thermal field electron emission from a thin dielectric (ZrO2) layers at the needle - shaped W and Mo microcrystals have shown that the emission process behavior does not agree with the classical theory. The phenomenon studied was called the abnormal thermal field emission (ATFE). It has been found that normalized brightness of the ATFE electron sources are two orders of magnitude higher then well known ZrO/W<;100> Schottky cathodes.
