Abstract :
Summary form only given. We report the optical limiting behavior of carbon black suspensions (CBS) in solvents of varying viscosity using a pulsed laser. The experiments were performed using a frequency-doubled, Q-switched, 5 ns (FWHM), Nd-YAG laser, operating at 10 Hz or single-shot repetition rate. Samples were prepared by mixing amorphous carbon particles with different host solvents, and placed in a 1 cm length cell. The particle hydrodynamic diameter was 155 /spl mu/m. The results show how CBS may be applied to optical limiting of high repetition rate lasers, by using low viscosity solvents and small carbon particles.
