Abstract :
OSI model is a layered reference model. It is inflexible and each layer have boundary which restricts the layers to share information between each other. It is suitable for wired network but due to inflexibility it cannot full fill the requirements of wireless network. So researcher found new Cross layer model. It is a layered architecture like OSI model but flexible, overcome the boundaries between layers. Cross-layer design refers to protocol design which exploits the dependence between protocol layers to obtain performance gains. This is unlike layering, where the protocols at the different layers are designed independently. This paper presents the requirements of cross layer routing protocols, various cross layer routing protocols proposed by various researchers and their various issues which are under active research.
