Abstract
Semantic standardization is the key to preventing waste in the information industry. Technical standards have contributed to mature solutions at the technical interoperability layer. However, semantic interoperability remains a major barrier for efficient government information systems. This article discusses various semantic standardization efforts that are underway, with a focus on recent work by the European Commission´s Interoperability Solutions for European Public Administration (ISA) Program.
