Abstract :
Since 1992 DRIVE V2053 ADS project has been working at the development of an automatic toll collection system in a multilane environment, where drivers can undergo a complete financial transaction without having to stop or even to be channelled by means of physical barriers. The very peculiar constraints arising from such a system require the solution to number of technical problems, involving state-of-the-art technologies and very efficient communication protocols. The design will be based on the technologies already used for the TEEEPASS system, implemented for the Italian highways by Autostrade S.p.A. working since 1990, though many modifications will be necessary to meet of a multilane configuration. An overview of the planned solution is presented, together with a description of the laboratory tests, that were performed to evaluate its performance
