Abstract
We propose a shared protected network design algorithm that iteratively improves the degree to which backup paths are shared and hence fiber utilization. We introduce novel measures to evaluate the degree of backup resource sharing and that of fiber utilization. The proposed method iteratively redesigns groups of paths that are selected in the order determined by the measures. Numerical analysis demonstrates that the proposed algorithm can substantially reduce the backup resource requirements and hence fiber cost.
