Abstract :
We report the design, fabrication, and performance of various 2×2 and 4×4 optical switches. We present the monolithic integration of laser diodes and switches, and on-chip optical mode transformers for effective fiber to chip coupling. Polarization independent switching with a current of 9 mA is demonstrated. An output power of 0.5 mW from a chip containing a laser diode and a switch has been achieved. The coupling loss of a butt coupled single mode fiber to an InP waveguide via an integrated mode transformer is as low as 1.5 dB
