Abstract :
The use of multiple antennas at the transmitter and the receiver is considered for the uplink of cellular communication systems. The achievable spectral efficiency in bits/s/Hz is used as the criterion for comparing various design choices. The focus of the paper is on outage capacities achievable in wideband CDMA systems when the receiver uses the the matched-filter or the minimum-mean squared error (MMSE) detector. Using results in the large system asymptote, the effect of multiple antennas on achievable spectral efficiencies is studied. In addition, comparisons are made between CDMA and orthogonal multi-access with multiple antennas.
