Abstract :
In general, reliability of power systems can be enhanced when they are connected. Electric power can be transferred to support each other in case one of them engages in electric power deficiency. The power transfer capability is assessed by Available Transfer Capability or ATC index, which is proposed by North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC). According to NERC´s definition, ATC is defined as the transfer capability remaining in the physical transmission network. However, ATC depends on several factors, e.g. Total Transfer Capability (TTC), Transmission Reliability Margin (TRM), and Capacity Benefit Margin (CBM). This paper is focused on the calculation of TRM, one of the security margin reserved for any uncertainty of system conditions. Rather than point to point transfer, the Area-based transfer which is a power transferred between 2 groups of buses is of interest in this paper. The TRM proposed in this paper comprises 2 terms, maximum and security-guaranteed TRM. Both of them are determined by a concept of risk analysis. The proposed method is applied to the IEEE 118-bus test system. Satisfactory results were obtained.
