Abstract :
We designed and constructed a gyrotron to generate submillimeter waves with the frequency of more than 1 THz at the second cyclotron harmonic. We selected the TE/sub 26,3,1/ mode in the experimental tube, which is less susceptible to the mode competition for THz emission at second harmonic operation. In the first experiment, several oscillations were observed at fundamental operation. The oscillation of which frequency reaches as high as 495 GHz is expected to be the TE/sub 9,3,2/ mode that is severely competitive with the second harmonic TE/sub 26,3,1/ mode at 1 THz.<>
