Abstract :
The authors summarize the performance deterioration mechanism in complete and interworking asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks connected with existing networks and propose common performance specification concepts for multimedia services. Representative ATM performance parameters based on these concepts, in particular the observability of impairments at each portion boundary point, are proposed for network performance design. Finally, network performance objectives using the parameters are considered from the viewpoint of customer satisfaction and the physical performance of network facilities in actual environments
