Abstract
Renewable energy generation, in the form of both onshore and offshore windfarms, is a rapidly growing, high-tech industry on a worldwide basis. The development of larger, more efficient turbines is opening up new frontiers in wind energy generation in the form of large offshore windfarms. This paper describes how the use of high voltage direct current (HVDC) technology can be used to fully realise the potential of these developments, overcoming a number of major technical challenges facing traditional AC solutions and providing the project developers and utility receiving the renewable energy supply with an efficient, economic and reliable solution.
