Abstract :
The evolution of the International Standard, IEC 896-2 Stationary Lead Acid Batteries of the VRLA Type, is shown together with the background reasons for its revision. The revised standard, IEC 60896-2-1 has reached the IEC Committee draft (CD) stage and now defines, in three sets of clauses, test methods to characterize stationary VRLA lead acid battery safety, performance and durability. A total of 23 test methods will be available to evaluate the stationary VRLA lead acid batteries of a manufacturer´s product portfolio in such a fashion that the battery specifier or end-user can pick with confidence the most suited VRLA lead acid battery for his application field. This paper presents the status of the revision with date 12.6.2001.
