Abstract
The generally modulated deterministic process (GMDP) model has been introduced within the European commission RACE program. The superposition of GMDP traffic sources can be so complicated that the superposition of n k -state traffic sources can have up to (n +k -1)-factorial divided by n -factorial times (k-1)-factorial states. The authors present an efficient approach to reduce the number of states for superposed traffic sources to n ×(k -1)+1 by selecting associated cell rates of the states and combining the superposed states with the same cell rates together. Therefore, the traffic sources can be characterized more precisely by using more states without increasing the complexity of the superposed traffic sources. The authors show that the superposed traffic sources become smoother when the number of traffic sources increases
