Abstract
The well known formula for the ideal gain of an element in an infinite planar array is derived with methodical purposes on the basis of the general antenna theory applied to periodic structures. The derivation shows that the ideal element gain is a secondary array parameter determined by the ideal element pattern despite the fact that, historically, the formula for it was written earlier than it was done for the ideal array element pattern.
