Abstract
A new vibration attenuation device equipped with robustness properties is developed. The device is an active mass damper (AMD) with an electromagnetic actuator. It is intended to attenuate undesirable vibration of a building floor. Based on the coupling between the AMD and floor dynamics, a robust H/sub 2/ controller design is proposed. The controller design also incorporates the characteristics of the AMD at low frequency domain. From simulation and experimental results, it is concluded that the controller designed is capable to suppress vibration in a wide range of frequency, effectively suppresses vibration due to the 1st and 2nd natural frequencies of the floor while assuring the stability robustness of the system when its higher natural frequencies are excited.
