Abstract :
A time optimal voltage-constrained deceleration velocity profile is derived for a disk drive with a rotary head positioning actuator. Since available power supply voltage, rather than current, often limits seek performance in small form factor disk drives, it is possible to achieve faster seek performance using a time optimal seek deceleration profile based on a constraint on available voltage. Such a profile makes better utilization of both supply voltage and actuator motor back EMF, and requires no additional on-line computation compared to the current-constrained constant deceleration velocity profiles now in use today
